The Siemens PSE Model-Based Innovation Prize 2022
Guidelines for entry
The judges will favour entries that make substantial use of gPROMS® advanced process modelling technology in achieving one or more of the following:
- focus on applications in novel areas of digital design and digital operation technologies
- focus on novel areas of process and related technology – for example, hydrogen storage, CO2 utilisation, novel propylene processes, etc.
- focus on novel approaches to traditional process areas – for example, heat-integrated distillation columns and other novel separation configurations.
- bring simulation and modelling to process areas where they are not currently applied systematically – for example, fermentation and other biotechnology processes, food processing, formulated products manufacture, etc.
- represent a step-change in approach to existing applications – for example, design of reactors, crystallizers or other complex equipment.
- take first-principles models into new areas of application – for example, online real-time optimisation (RTO), non-linear model-based predictive control, etc.
- focus on novel areas of modelling and optimisation technology – for example, the implementation of new global optimisation methods.
- focus on novel areas of application for process modelling tools – for example, cell metabolism modelling.
- focus on applications that have a positive impact on society and the environment.
The decision of the judges will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Instructions for authors
Initially you need only submit an abstract. That should be followed by the full publication prior to the closing date.
When submitting the full paper, in addition to the publication itself please provide the following information in order to help the judges make a decision:
- describe clearly how you used a gPROMS family product (for example, gPROMS ModelBuilder) during the research covered by the paper
- list the main gPROMS platform features used (for example, dynamic modelling, parameter estimation etc.)
- list which graphics, figures and tables were constructed using gPROMS or results from gPROMS runs
- briefly state why you used a gPROMS product in preference to other software.
Please acknowledge the use of gPROMS in your references. Siemens PSE's preferred reference is:

Terms & conditions
The following terms and conditions apply:
- The offer is open to anyone, academic or otherwise who has published a technical paper in the required time period.
- The paper must have been published between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2022 in:
- an internationally recognised technical journal, as recognised by the Web of Science
- conference proceedings with an ISBN number. In this case, award will be subject to timely provision of any supplementary technical material requested by the judges. The paper as published in the proceedings should be a minimum of 5 pages in length of body (including any diagrams).
- Papers which have been accepted for publication in a journal and have been assigned a digital object identifier (known as doi) are also welcome.
- You are welcome to resubmit a paper previously entered provided it meets the publication date criterion.
- The deadline for submissions for the 2022 Prize is midnight BST on 29 July 2022.
- The work described in the paper should have made reasonably substantial use of gPROMS® platform products to achieve the results described. This should be evident within the text of the paper. Where possible PSE/gPROMS should be cited in the references.
- Papers should be submitted in pdf or MS Word format, in English, to [email protected], with accompanying details submitted on the application form.
- The papers will be judged by a panel of three judges headed by Prof. Stratos Pistikopoulos, Director of the Texas A&M Energy Institute and holds the Dow Chemical Chair in the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University.
- The decision of the judges will be final, and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.
- Where more than one author is listed, the authors should choose a corresponding author, who will be responsible for the submission and all subsequent correspondence.
- The prize money will be handed or transmitted to the corresponding author for the winning paper in the form of a cheque or by transfer to his or her bank.
- The allocation of prize money between the authors is a matter for the authors to decide between themselves.
- The corresponding author will be responsible for distribution of the prize money between the authors. Siemens PSE will not take responsibility for allocation or distribution of prize money between authors.
- The competition is not open to employees of Siemens PSE or researchers affiliated with the panel of judges.
